PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2017
MEN’S MIDWEEK GOLF CLUB

Gentlemen golfers, we had another great year for golf in Vancouver! The wet Spring led to endless Summer for us to enjoy right up until today, when the cold tentacles of Winter are about to strike.

Almost the entire Executive was new this year, and I must thank them all for rising to the challenge adeptly. As Bill Harkema noted in his 2016 President’s Report, we are an aging group. Now, we have new younger blood in the Executive, and there will be four new Committee Chairmen for 2018, with the anticipation of more revitalization of the Committees.

May I introduce the Executive of your club?

Past President Bill Harkema
Captain Mike Sawyer
Vice Captain Gary Giroux
Secretary Cliff Lemire
Treasurer Dan Huber
Member at Large Ian Borland

Our Committee Chairs kept us going smoothly.

The Administrative group includes:

Membership – Tony Bates
Social Chair – Ian Borland
Communications Chair - Vern Campbell
Trophies and Records - Jim Richards

The Golf group is:

Rules Chair – Jim Lugsdin
Handicap Chair – Dave Stephens
Match Committee – Gary Giroux
Fall Classic – Don Cook
University Cup – Tim Bale
Away Games – Mel Endelman and Scott Morgan
Inter Club and Winter Golf – John Podmore

My sincere thanks to these men and the dedicated members of their Committees, and thank you to Vern Campbell for Chairing the Nominating Committee re the 2018 Executive.

The weekly Low Net and Par Points were keenly contested, as were our 21 competitions held throughout the year. Our average turnout is 85 – 100 golfers weekly, with 110 on one occasion. More players are using the forward tee boxes, and enjoying attaining the greens in regulation.

We accepted many new Full Play members this year, and plan to continue accelerated acceptance from the Wait List until we have 190 – 200 members in the Wednesday group for 2018. That should nicely fill our 120 assigned slots, and reduce the Wait List. We currently have 170 Full Members, 27 Social, 3 Honourary, and 65 on the Wait List.

The Members Handbook will be revised for 2018 to correct errors and improve clarity. Some Tournament dates will be rearranged to prevent conflicts. Tighter rules for the Thunderbird will be in effect. Enforcement of the ‘no gimmies’ rule will be in effect for those that wish to submit cards for competitions. The Rules Committee will be continuing to educate golfers about the “Rules of Golf”.

In closing, this club runs by the devoted efforts of many unsung heroes who work quietly to ensure that you have a good golf experience at UGC. As President, I invite you to call me with any concerns or suggestions you may have regarding our organization.

Thank you
Larry Burr,
President MMWC 2017

It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce the passing of our long time Club Member Robert (Bob) Kubicek. Bob passed away on October 9th following a short battle with pneumonia. More information to follow;

Simplified tips from the Rules Committee.

  1. http://www.randa.org/RulesEquipment/Rules/QuickGuide/Start This site has a great introductory film by Padraig Harrington and a PDF file with great explanatory diagrams.
  2. There is a rules APP on the Apple and Android App sites for easy use anywhere at any time.

Local Rule if the ball or ball marker is accidentally moved on the putting green.

When a player’s ball lies on the putting green, there is no penalty if the ball or ball-marker is accidentally moved by the player, his partner, his opponent, or any of their caddies or equipment.

The ball or ball-marker accidentally moved must be replaced to the original position.

This Local Rule applies only when the player’s ball or ball-marker lies on the putting green and any movement is accidental.

Examples of accidentally moving the ball or marker and replacing without penalty.
  • Preparing to make a stroke at address and accidentally moving the ball.
  • Dropping the ball and it accidentally moves the ball marker.
  • Dropping the marker and it accidentally moves the ball.
  • If you, your caddie or your partner accidentally kick the ball.
Note 1: If it is determined that a player’s ball on the putting green was moved as a result of wind, water or some other natural cause such as the effects of gravity, the ball must be played as it lies from its new location. A ball-marker moved in such circumstances is replaced. No penalty.

Note 2: If the player purposefully causes the ball to move, example picks up the ball before marking, the ball must be replaced with a one stroke penalty. See RCGA rule 18-i,ii.
