2009 GENERAL COMPETITION INFORMATION

Competitions

There are several different types of competitions available to members. Information on the various competitions is included in this Fixture Booklet and will also be posted on the Men’s Locker Room Bulletin Board and Pro Shop Awards Board in advance of each competition.

Weekly Competition consists of individual stroke play with prizes for low net, and high par points by handicap division and KP holes 3, 7, 11, 16, and 18. Players must submit a completed Par Points card to be considered in the par points and low net competitions. Winners are posted and prizes distributed the following Wednesday via the Pro Shop Awards Board. Full-Play and Limited-Play members with official up-to-date handicaps are eligible to participate in the Weekly Competition.
.
Competitive Trophy Events are played over 1 – 4 weeks on Wednesdays. There are both stroke and match events in singles, doubles and team formats. See detailed descriptions on the event pages elsewhere in this book. Entry for some events requires advance sign up in addition to the regular “highlighting” sign up for weekly play. Competitive (trophy) events are open only to Full-Play members with official up-to-date handicaps.

Special One-Day Events: There are two such events held on days other than Wednesday at UGC, University Cup and Putt-a-Rama. Both of these require advance sign-up and have a limited number of spaces. These events are open to Full-Play members with an official up-to-date handicap.

Sign-up and Cancellation Procedures

Sign-up Sheets for the regular weekly draw are posted 3 weeks in advance on the Men’s Locker Room Bulletin Board. Highlight your name and Note a preferred tee-time, if appropriate, and put a “C” after your name if you need a Power Cart. Other requests concerning the draw may be made to the Match Committee directly or leave a note in the Men’s Locker Room Score Card Box. If a Full-Play Member is not involved in a competition or it is an Open Play Wednesday, the Match Committee will try to accommodate a personal request for specific playing partners but discourages repeated requests. The Sign-up Sheets heading will indicate for each week if it is a “Tee-Time” or “8:00 AM Shotgun” day. Note this information when you sign up.

Deadline for sign up for the next week’s draw is the preceding Wednesday. If you miss this deadline and wish to play, contact UGC Guest Services, 604 224-7799, to be put on the Cancellation List.

Cancellation must be made as early as possible prior to your
Tee-Time in person or call
UGC Guest Services, 604 224-7799, or
E-mail lessons@universitygolf.com
"No-shows" may be subject to financial penalty.

Open play is always available for members who are not participating in a scheduled competition. A few days are designated as Open Play that might be used as make-up days in the event of rain-outs or for an additional event. Because Open Play days provide more flexibility in scheduling, we are better able to respond to requests for specific foursomes or partners.

Vacation: The vacation sign-up sheet is posted on the Men’s Locker Room Bulletin Board for those members who plan to be away for an extended period, i.e. 3 or more weeks, and therefore are unable to sign-up in the normal manner. On the indicated return date, your name will automatically be included in the draw.

Score Cards and Keeping Score

UGC Score Cards are to be used to report scores from all of the Stroke Play competitive events. Please use “Markers” by exchanging cards within the foursome. (A “marker” is a fellow playing partner who keeps your score, as well as his own).

Par Points Cards submitted following each Wednesday’s play enables Full-Play and Limited-Play Member eligible for the weekly low net and par points prizes, or to have new eclectic scores entered. The Par Points Card must show your PRINTED name, date of event, nine-hole scores, gross score, handicap, net score, par points with total, and Eclectic Scores circled with “Eclectic” printed on the top of the card. The card must be legibly signed and attested. Instructions for calculating par points are posted on the bulletin board in the locker room.

Please note: Incorrect or illegible cards will be discarded and players disqualified at the discretion of the Match Committee.
Par Point Cards must be submitted to record the number of games played each year. Full-play members are required to play at least 10 Wednesday games per year and Limited-play members, 3 Wednesday games.

Allocation of Weekly Prizes: In the interest of spreading the prizes around players are not permitted to receive a low net and a par points prize each week. If a player is nominally eligible for two such prizes he will be awarded the prize of higher value. Players may receive more than one KP prize each week, independent of the low net or par points prizes.

Ties: In stroke play, including weekly low net and par points competitions, ties will be broken by the Retrogression Method, i.e. cards will be matched beginning with the net scores from the last 9 holes (holes 10 - 18) and proceeding through last 6 holes, last 3 holes and hole #18 using percentage the of total handicap. In the event that a tie remains after the back nine, the procedure will apply to the front nine. (RCGA Rule 33-6, Appendix 1, 11(c)).

Putting Out: Club Championship players must putt out, no gimmies.

Other competitions, fellow players can concede to a player a 10” or less gimmie putt. 10” is about the length of standard putter grip.

Event Cancellation: If weather or course conditions require cancellation of a competition, the missed round will be rescheduled at the discretion of the Captain.

Handicap

Handicap: Members require an up-to-date RCGA handicap to be eligible to participate in Club Events such as Low Net, Par Points, and competitions. All players must enter their ESC (Equitable Stroke Control) adjusted gross score for all rounds played at UGC and other courses as soon as possible after completion of a round into the RCGA Site at UGC or at home using the internet. Recommendation: players can use one of the Pro Shop computers to enter their gross or adjusted gross score on a Wednesday round before leaving the course.

Please Note: If you already have an ID# or username and password from a course other than UGC, please provide this to the Captain, so the records may be accessed and transferred.

RCGA web site: CLICK HERE

When playing in a Match or a Stroke Play Net Score event, or submitting a Par Points Card, players shall use their current “Course Handicap” each week unless the Match committee decrees otherwise. To determine your current Handicap, refer to the "Course Handicap Conversion Chart/Men/White Tees" at the Pro Shop computer table. For all weekly and trophy competitions, the maximum handicap that may be claimed is 40.

NOTE: Maximum adjusted score for players with a 0-18 handicap is 2 over par per hole. For those with a handicap of 19 or more the maximum adjusted score is 3 over par per hole.

Equitable Stroke Control, “ESC Adjusted Gross Score” and Handicap.

There are two scores to consider when you play a round of golf:
1. Your Stroke Play total gross score submitted on UGC score cards for competitions and Par Points Card gross score for each 9 and total 18 holes less your current handicap.
2. Your “ESC adjusted gross score” entered into the RCGA computer for handicap purposes only. This score involves adjusting downward the unusually high gross score on a hole.
The maximum allowed adjustment varies with handicap:
0 – 18: par + 2
19 – 33: par + 3
33 and over: par + 4
Add the adjusted gross score for entry into the RCGA handicap website.

  • Tournament Scores: During the year, selected Stroke Play events are chosen as “Tournaments” for handicap purposes.
The gross score or ESC adjusted gross score from these events are to be identified as Tournament Scores when entering the results into the RCGA web site. The following are the designated Tournaments:

      Thunderbird
      Kelbert
      Club Championship
      Turkey Shoot
      Oliver
      Milne
      Forrest

Enter your adjusted score into the RCGA computer site and identify it as a Tournament Score.

Handicap Audit: All Tournament and selected Wednesday scores will be audited by the Handicap Committee during the playing season.

Please note: In extreme cases, the Handicap Committee may be required to institute an administrative score entry and/or adjust your Handicap Factor.

Pace of Play:
UGC and the Men’s Mid-Week Club have an objective to complete 18-holes in 4 hours and 15 minutes or less to enhance the enjoyment of the game. Members are requested to conduct themselves accordingly.

Suggestions:
1. KEEP UP with the group in front of you.
2. If your group is falling behind, have the first two players who putt-out go to the next tee and tee-off.
3. Play READY GOLF.
4. Let SHORT HITTERS TEE OFF FIRST.
5. PUTT CONTINUOUSLY when convenient, don’t mark short putts.
6. After putting out, go to the next tee to mark your scores.
7. PLAY SHOTS QUICKLY.
8. Leave carts and clubs on the side closest the next tee.
9. When looking for a lost ball time limit is 5 minutes.

MEN’S MID-WEEK LOCAL RULES FOR 2009

    c. Drop a ball within two (2) club-lengths of the spot where the ball lay or entered the hazard, but not nearer the hole.

Out of Bounds, play a Provisional Ball:

Competition Play: In the likelihood that his ball has gone out of bounds or may be lost, a player must hit a provisional second ball.
Out of bounds is defined by the nearest inside point of white stakes or fence posts bordering the golf course at ground level.
Penalty - stroke and distance

Open Play: If a player fails to hit a provisional ball and subsequently discovers the first ball is out of bounds or lost, he may, in the interest of maintaining the pace of play, substitute another ball as close to the point where his first ball crossed the out of bounds line or at the nearest point of relief, but no nearer the hole.
Penalty – two strokes

Ball lost through the green:
Where there is reasonable evidence that a ball is lost on the fairway or open rough areas in abnormal ground conditions, including casual water, ground under repair, plugged, or an area heavily littered with leaves or other debris, a player may substitute another ball and take relief by dropping a ball at the approximate location of the first ball or if necessary within one club length of the outermost limit of the

On holes 1 and 5, netting and guy wires are obstructions when this structure interferes with stance or swing. A player is allowed to lift and drop the ball on the fairway side of the netting within one club length not nearer the hole without penalty. Similarly, if a playable ball lies between the netting and boundary fence on holes 1 and 5, a player may lift and drop within one club length of, but not nearer the hole on the fairway side of the netting without penalty (Rule 24-2 applies). An unplayable ball located between the boundary fence and the netting may be played on the fairway side of the netting, as above, penalty one stroke.
Stones in bunkers are considered movable obstructions and may be removed without penalty (Rule 24-1) applies

Note: “through the green” is the whole area of the course except:

    1. The teeing ground and putting green of the hole being played.
    2. All hazards on the course.
Exception: If the ball lies within 3 feet of, or against, a tree trunk, the preferred lie rule does not pertain. The ball must be played as it lies. Alternatively, it may be declared unplayable and dropped within two club lengths of the spot no nearer the hole. (Rule 28 applies).
Penalty - one stroke

Ground Under Repair:
If a player’s ball comes to rest in an area marked “Ground Under Repair”, he may lift and drop within one club length, no nearer the hole. No penalty
All planted flower areas are “Ground Under Repair”, from which play is prohibited. If a player’s ball lies in this area or the area interferes with the player’s stance or his intended line of shot, he must take relief. (Rules 25-1 & 33-2 a.(iii) apply) No penalty
If a player’s ball has come to rest in a location that he believes should have been marked or declared “ground under repair”, he may treat it as such only after obtaining the agreement of his playing partners including, if appropriate, any opponent(s). No penalty
